Shen Dao - Xingyiquan Three Day Intensive

nr. Aberystwyth: Llanilar Community Centre
10 September 2010 - 12 September 2010

SHEN DAO (The Way of the Spirit) is the vehicle for the Martial Arts teachings formulated and developed by Raymond Towers, founder of the UKTQF.

Shen Dao has its foundations in the Chinese Internal Martial Arts System and Chinese Health and Medical Theory, providing practitioners with a complete and balanced training system.

Shen Dao follows the natural process of the 5 Elements and the Yijing (I Ching) and is based upon the Chinese Internal Martial Arts systems of Baguazhang, Taijiquan (Tai Chi Chuan), Xingyiquan and Fung Shou, each taught from both a health and martial perspective.

Xingyiquan, often translated as ‘Mind-Heart Boxing,’ is a direct fighting system - relatively easy to learn, but difficult to master. Proper body mechanics and quieting of the mind and body are of utmost importance to excel in this art. The key to proper body mechanics and a quiet mind is Santishi. We believe that it is only through the proper, persistent practice of Santishi that the practitioner will develop the power for which Xingyiquan is renowned.

Born of Santishi, the Wuxing ("Five Elements") teach us to bring the qualities developed from stillness into motion. Simple in appearance, the Wuxing hold depth and subtle circularity that requires correct instruction and dedicated practice to realise the true potential of Xingyquan.

The power is generated from the ground with the legs and transmitted through the body and arms. The Xingyiquan stylist strikes with the entire body and mind, not merely the hand.

Xingyiquan forms are simple but the content is very rich. The movements are compact and direct, and utilise the combination of liuhe (three internal and three external coordinations). In practice you learn to go beyond form itself.

The principle practice of Xingyiquan is the five elements forms (Wu Xing Mu Quan, “five shapes mother fist”), standing meditation (zhan zhuang, “post standing”). We begin by focusing on pi quan, which is the first and most important of the five elements. You practise Gang Jin (hard power) and make this Jin quick, vibrating, penetrating, crisp, determined and complete.

The Five Element Linking Set then gives a flowing structure within which to work, learn and develop the principles of the five elements, developing strength, agility power and Qi.

We go on to study the Twelve Animals as well as the use of the Staff and the Sword in Xingyiquan.

We will look at Xinggyiquan from a health development perspective and look at the martial principles and applications. With practice you will learn to adopt and evolve the energy and strength of Xingyiquan, developing further dynamic energetic and fighting spirit, for life and for your practice.
