Falls Prevention
The holistic exercise programme developed by the United Kingdom Taiji Qi Gong Foundation for Falls Prevention is based on the principals of sound biomechanics, placing the individual at the centre of the process. To this end we also introduce the concept of positive thinking to work in unison with physical principals to help alleviate the stressors that are often associated with aging, thereby providing a total body mind approach to this form of intervention.
The outcomes associated with Taiji Qigong as an intervention protocol are as follows:
Awareness of postural connectivity:
The ability to coordinate the upper, lower, left and right sectors of the body providing a stable gate whilst moving and providing a positive structure for relaxation. Increased muscular and cardiovascular loading through precise joint mobilisation, though the lowering of the centre of gravity to create a more stable posture.
Relaxation and Sensitivity Development:
Physical tension can be created through emotional stress. Such stress raises the centre of gravity making it increasingly difficult for the muscular system to make the necessary adjustments to ensure balance and coordination. Relaxation and Sensitivity Development provide a new environment in which the muscular system can work more effectively.
Addressing Postural Hypertension:
Structural alignment is emphasised, reducing stressors in the bodies physical system, creating a framework for the body’s internal systems to work naturally and in harmony with each other.
Efficient, effective and economic movement becomes more necessary as we age; therefore Taiji Qigong has the ability by emphasising connective awareness to provide us with safe, low impact and sustainable exercise regime to help maintain an enhanced quality of life.
The exercises developed by the UKTQF have been developed with a view to ensuring that efficient economic movement can be incorporated into an individual’s lifestyle through an accessible and enjoyable process. Developing the body progressively improving joint mobility, balance, bodily awareness, strength, flexibility and agility whilst working simultaneously to strengthen the body’s internal systems. The sequence of exercises provide building blocks for the practitioners to gain in understanding and confidence enabling them to practice the movements to their full potential.
Falls cause a physical and emotional trauma to the individual as well as increasing financial cost to the providers of health care. Therefore, as a protocol of intervention Taiji Qigong offers a proven positive solution.
